Why I’m in the CrossFit Open

I wasn’t going to be in the CrossFit Open. In three years at CrossFit R560 Tralee, I never have been, so why now? Why not! It’s a community and it’s part of what it’s all about. Everybody working out together on the same WODs, with the same kit, competing against ourselves and each other. The most important thing here though is the ‘ourselves’ part. Becoming a better, stronger, fitter version of myself every day, week, month, year.

CrossFit for me is about improving my everyday life. Through University, when I didn’t have a job, a house, dogs, a relationship, or a care in the world, I loved to kayak, climb, and mountain bike, to name but a few activities. I did those things and trained for those things in every moment that I wasn’t in lectures or the pub. Heck, I sometimes skipped lectures and the pub to do those things. I still love to participate in those activities, though they’re a lot harder to find the time to do. However, if I decide to dust the bike off and go for a ride on a Sunday, I know I can do it. I might not be as ‘bike fit’ as I used to be, but I can still have a blast—same with the other activities.

So why the Open, and why now after all this time? It felt right, that’s about it. $20/€16, for 5 workouts, assessed and logged on a global scale, rankings in your country, region and the world, saved for next year to compare progress over time and per workout against other box members, and the best in the world. It seems like a pretty good deal to me! For me, it’ll also help to formally highlight my many shortcomings in the CrossFit world, give me something to really focus on for the next 12 months of training.

Don’t fret, there’s still time if you want to be a competitor in the 2018 CrossFit Open, register at Games.CrossFit.com and submit your score on Open Workout 18.1 before 5:00 p.m. PT on Monday, February 26. For us in Ireland, that translates to 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb 26. Remember to have your scores verified by a judge, read the standards carefully for each workout, and have fun! There will be a good few people completing the workouts on a Friday evening so book in and join us.
